Sherry Anne McLaughlin August 27, 1945 ~ June 10, 2021 (age 75)
Obituary Sherry Anne McLaughlin, age 75, of Bear, DE passed away peacefully on Thursday June 10, 2021, with her family at her side. Sherry was born in Wilmington Delaware, grew up in the Claymont area and raised her family in Elsmere, Delaware. Sherry was a "classically trained vocalist" and enjoyed sharing her beautiful voice with others. Sherry participated in the All-State choir and glee club during her high school years and in the late 70’s to mid-80s participated in the St Thomas adult choir and served as director of the St. Thomas children’s choir. Sherry spent most of her early career in the restaurant business, beginning with the Dutch Pantry, Poor Richard Inn, Sherton Hotel and ending at Arner’s Family Restaurant where she worked with both of her sons. Once her children were older, Sherry left the restaurant business and began her career in banking. Sherry retired from the Bank of New York/Chase in 2003. Sherry lived her life for her three children and took great pride in her three grandchildren. Sherry loved to travel for family vacations and making lasting memories with her family. Sherry was preceded in death by her loving husband, William “Todd” McLaughlin Jr; her oldest son, William J McLaughlin III; her parents, Richard and Agnes Bixler (Elwell); and siblings, Veronica Deldeo, Richard Bixler Jr, and Kathleen Smith. Sherry will be dearly missed by her children, Brien McLaughlin and Amber Hinton (Michael); her grandchildren, Darby McLaughlin, Cooper and Parker Hinton; her sister, Jacqueline Wirkkala; brother, David Bixler; and her many nieces and nephews, especially her niece, Chrichele Fahr.
A visitation for Sherry will be held on Monday, June 28, 2021, from 10:00 am to 11:00 am with Mass of Christian Burial beginning at 11:00 am at St. Thomas the Apostle Church located at 301 North Bancroft Parkway, Wilmington, DE 19805. Thank you for your kind thoughts and prayers, to all of you who wished us well during this unexpected turn of events.
Amber’s mom, Sherry was admitted to the hospital on Wednesday as noted earlier. She quietly and peacefully passed away the following day. Most of you don’t know this, but Amber has a beautiful voice and so does her niece Darby, who does live theater and lead roles in musicals at local venues. I’m telling you this because they gave their mom and grandmom the most precious goodbye, as they sang all Sherry’s favorite songs for hours before she passed. It was touching, intimate and the best good-bye gift they could have given Sherry as she prepared to meet her other angels in heaven. It gave Amber the time she needed to break through her exhaustion; and be at peace with the loss of her mother. yesterday, june 10, 2021, the world lost one of the strongest women to ever touch down on this earth. sherry was the best mother, aunt, and grandmother anyone could have ever asked for. she was funny without even trying, leaving us in stitches by just a random quip she said. she was incredibly loving to everyone in her circle, always making sure we were happy. she was very particular, you could never go to her room without her asking why you were wearing something or why you had no lipstick on. she fought hard for her family and would do anything for any of us. she left peacefully with Chrichele Deldeo Fahr, Amber Hinton and i by her side. my aunt and i sang to her until her last breath. (which i’m pretty sure she hung on for another hour or so because she was enjoying the show and us all being together). it was peaceful and i think exactly how she would have wanted to leave. she now gets to reunite with my grandfather and her son, my uncle billy. i know she’s looking down on all of us. i love you so much grandmom, thank you for every single thing you have done for me. every time you made me smile, angry, laugh uncontrollably, and more. “kiss today goodbye and point me toward tomorrow. we did what we had to do. wont forget, can’t regret, what i did for love”
